Job Overview

The Occupational Safety and Health Specialist will provide a safe and health work environment in supporting the responsibility of the Government staff and managers. Implementing the program throughout the Government is the primary concern of the Occupational Safety and Health Official. The Program coordinates and oversees the training, duties, and guidance needed by the District Occupational Safety and Health Coordinators 

Job responsibilities

  • Conducting safety and health surveys and inspections of Government facilities to determine if the designated areas meet accepted standards for the safeguards of life and health of employees 

  • Assist the Government in developing agency-wide policy standards and addressing the safeguarding of life and health within the Department's facilities 

  • Draft documentation to be presented to the Government for comment and revise in accordance with guidance

  • Develop material and documents in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Program standards as promulgated by the Department of Labor Occupational Health and Safety Administration

  • Participate in inquiries of job-related injuries or accidents or reports of unsafe working conditions, and serve as the Office of Record Keeping for all work related injuries and illness for the Government. Conduct briefings, training classes, and presentations on Safety and Health

  • Coordinate periodic Occupational Safety and Health Conferences at DOJ training facilities 

  • Participate in special projects and studies affecting the overall safety and health of personnel in and on the Government's facilities and property

Job Requirements 

  • Bachelor's Degree with four (4) years of experience 

  • If no Bachelor's Degree, ten (10) years of experience developing and implementing safety and health programs for a diverse and geographically dispersed workforce 

  • Direct experience and expertise of OSHA and other United States Government safety regulations, analysis documentation, facility inspections, hazardous condition identification and proper corrective methods 

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills

  • Must have proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
